The Impact of Your Environment

In Admiral McRaven’s commencement speech at the University of Texas, he outlines the first lesson he learned in basic training, which is the importance of making your bed. He says that if you want to change the world, you should start off by making your bed. Making your bed each morning is a reminder that doing the small things right, makes achieving the big things possible.

Improving the space you live in can be a stepping stone for increasing productivity and happiness, in turn bettering your mental health. This can come in all shapes and sizes, meaning adding art, flowers, or other comforting objects can positively impact your well-being. Ideas for creating a safe and comforting environment:

– Make your bed every day
– Display paintings or other forms of art that you enjoy
– Place fresh flowers on your bedside table or other surfaces
– Put pictures of family, friends, pets, loved ones, and tranquil scenery in your home
– Listen to music that appeals to you
– Get something you enjoy the smell of, such as a candle
– Have a sensory toy like a stress ball or a small stuffed animal that helps you stay calm
– Get as much natural light and fresh air as possible
